Where you can start
You do not need a finished plan or a lot before you call. People come to a builder at different points: with plans in hand, with a lot and no plan, or with neither. Tell us where you are and we will tell you what we need to know next.
What gets decided, and in what order
Every custom home goes through the same decisions, though not always in the same order. Our services page describes the steps as we set them out.
- The plan. Which plan you build from, and what you want changed in it.
- The lot. Where the house goes, and what the site needs before a house can be built on it. Our guide to buying a lot lists what to check.
- The price. What it includes and what it leaves out. Our guide to comparing estimates lists the questions to ask.
- The agreement and the financing. Ask your lender what it needs from you and from the builder.
- Your selections: paint, brick, shingles, flooring, cabinets, countertops, doors, hardware and more.
- Construction, and how you will be kept informed while it happens.
- Completion, and what is covered afterwards.
Our guide to planning a custom home goes through these in more detail.
What to bring to a first conversation
- Your plans, or sketches and photos of homes you like.
- The address or survey of your lot, if you have one.
- A list of the rooms you need and what matters most to you.
- The range you want to spend.
- The name of your lender, if you have chosen one.
- Your questions.
Questions to ask us
- Can you build from plans I already have, and can they be changed?
- Can you help me look for a lot, or should I find one first?
- How is the price set, and what could change it?
- How often will we meet during construction, and who do I call with a question?
- What warranty comes with the home, and what does it cover?
We would rather answer these for your project than in general. Contact us and ask.
